GO WEST
Emporia State travels to Hays, Kan. for the Tiger Classic and four more non-conference matchups. They will take two members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, one from the Northern Sun and another member from the Lone Star Conference. These are the final matches before opening MIAA action against UNK.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets went 0-3 at the Southeastern Classic in Durant, Okla. On Friday Emporia State fell 3-0 to UT-Tyler in the opener that included a 32-30 second set. The Hornets lost to the host Savage Storm 3-0 and to Southern Nazarene 3-1 on Saturday.
Shelby Ebert and
Megan Stretton were named to the All-Tournament team.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is in his 16th year as head coach for Emporia State. He holds a record of 288-190 and has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances.
Lindy Mortensen is in her 16th year at Adams State and has over 200 wins with the Grizzlies.
Kristin Carmichael is in her eighth season with Black Hills State.
Terry Culhane is in his 18th year at SWMSU and has the most victories in program history.
Brandon Stephenson is 7-27 in his third year with the Aggies after taking over in 2019.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State went 0-3 at the Southeastern Classic. A number of Hornets had to step in and play in the first weekend due to injuries. Through the first three matches,
Megan Stretton leads the Hornets with 29 kills while adding 28 digs.
Ainslee Stepp has stepped up in the setter role with 7.9 assists per set through the first three matches for Emporia State.
Shelby Ebert,
Leah Mach,
Dorianne Lebron and
Orianna Clements all have double digit kills.
Mikayla Simons injured her ankle in the opener against UT-Tyler and did not play the final two matches.
SCOUTING ADAMS STATE
The Grizzlies split their first four matches and have started the season 2-2. In the last full season the Grizzlies went 9-18. The Hornets lead the all-time series with the Grizzlies.
SCOUTING BLACK HILLS STATE
The Yellow Jackets have started the season 2-2. Emporia State defeated Black Hills State in the only previous matchup.
SCOUTING SOUTHWEST MINN. STATE
The Mustangs have started the season 4-0 and finished the last full season 18-10. The Mustangs lead the Hornets 4-1 in the all-time series.
SCOUTING CAMERON
The Aggies have started the season 1-4 following a tough trip to the Washburn Invitational. The Aggies finished the last full season 6-23. The Hornets won the four previous matchups.
UP NEXT
Emporia State will travel to Neb.-Kearney on Friday, Sept. 17 to open MIAA play against the Lopers before a return trip to Hays the following day to take on Fort Hays.
