Southeastern Classic ends with 3-0 loss to SEOSU, 3-1 loss SNU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 September 4, 2021 – The Hornets returned to the court for two matches on day two of the Southeastern Classic in Durant, Okla. ESU fell 3-0 to Southeastern Oklahoma State and 3-1 to Southern Nazarene.

In the first match of the day, Southeastern got the first point before starting to trade points with the Hornets. Emporia State fell behind in the middle of the set 15-11 before calling timeout. The Hornets responded immediately with a 7-3 run and tied the set 18-18. Despite this run, the Savage Storm responded with a 7-1 run and won the first set 25-19.

The Hornets took an early 2-1 lead in the second set against the Savage Storm. SEOSU would then take the lead that they did not relinquish throughout the remainder of the set. Emporia State struggled to string together multiple points and were only able to hit .088 during the second set.

Emporia State scored the first point in set three before falling behind 6-1. The Hornets were able to trim the lead to 9-6 but that was not enough to keep the Savage Storm from success in the third set. SEOSU went on a 13-4 run and opened a 22-10 lead over Emporia State.  The Hornets would outscore the Savage Storm 6-3 to finish the set but fell 25-16 in the third set and 3-0 in the first match on Saturday.

Orianna Clements led the way for Emporia State with 7 kills on a .286 hitting percentage and 5 block assists. Megan Stretton added 7 kills while digging 6 balls. Ainslee Stepp added 19 assists.
 
Early in the first set, the Crimson Storm jumped out to a 6-1 lead over the Hornets, a lead that they would not relinquish throughout the first set as they went on to win 25-16.

The second set would be vastly different from the first. The Hornets and Crimson storm traded points early on until the set was tied 7-7. Four straight kills and a service ace gave the Hornets a 12-7 lead. Following a point to break up the run, a pair of kills by Megan Stretton and Carleigh Pritchard made it 14-8. The Hornets continued to grow their lead through an outstanding hitting performance during the second set. The Hornets recorded a .412 hitting percentage on their way to 12 kills in the set.

The beginning of the third set was similar to the second as both the Hornets and Crimson Storm traded points. Errors by both teams allowed the game to stay within two points until the set was tied 10-10. At this point Southern Nazarene went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 16-10. A late surge by the Hornets trimmed the Crimson Storm lead to 22-20, however SNU would go on to score the final three points and take the set 25-20.

The Hornets started the fourth set with a pair of kills before the Crimson Storm responded with three straight points. Both teams would yet again trade points for the early part of the set. The match had the second 7-7 tie before the Hornets went on a 10-6 run to capture their biggest lead of the set 17-13. SNU responded with a 10-3 run and took a 23-20 lead that they would hold onto and win the set 25-23 and win the match 3-1.

Megan Stretton led Emporia State with 18 points, finishing with 18 kills, two block assists, while digging 8 balls. Leah Mach added 10 kills with a .304 hitting percentage, while adding 3 block assists. Dorianne Lebron had 4 kills and led the team with 4 block assists. Ainslee Stepp recorded 37 assists.

The Hornets will be back in action next Friday at the Tiger Classic in Hays when they play against Adams State at 10:00 am and Black Hills State at 5:00 pm.
