TAKING ON THE BEST
Emporia State travels to Kearney, Neb. for the MIAA opener against the #1 nationally ranked Lopers before heading to Fort Hays State to take on the Tigers.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Friday in Hays, Kan., Emporia State fell 3-0 to Adams State before trading sets on their way to a 3-2 victory of Black Hills State. This was the first win on the year for the Hornets. The following day, the Hornets fell to #8 nationally ranked Southwest Minnesota State before finishing the weekend with a 3-0 over Cameron.
Shelby Ebert and
Rylie Fornelli were named to the All-Tourney team.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is in his 16th year as head coach for Emporia State. He holds a record of 290-195 and has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances. He is 0-19 against Neb.-Kearney and 24-7 against Fort Hays State..
Rick Squiers took over the UNK program in 1999 and is in his 22nd year with the Lopers. He is 683-89 since beginning at Neb.-Kearney and has two National Runner-Up finishes. He is 21-0 against Emporia State.
Jessica Wood-Atkins is in her third year with Fort Hays State and has a record of 17-45 since taking over the program. She is 2-2 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State has started the season 2-5 after picking up their first two wins of the year at the Tiger Classic in Hays. After not playing the opening weekend, setter
Riley Bernskoetter made her return to the court with a pair of matches with 35 or more assists for the Hornets. Through the first seven matches,
Shelby Ebert and
Megan Stretton pace the team with 63 and 57 kills respectively. Both are averaging around 2.5 kills per set.
Dorianne Lebron and
Orianna Clements have 40 and 30 kills respectively.
SCOUTING NEB-KEARNEY
The Lopers are ranked #1 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll and have started the season 8-0 while only dropping three sets year. The Lopers have five players with 42 or more kills in their eight matches and an overall time attack percentage of 0.283. In the last full season, Nebraska-Kearney went 38-1, with their only loss coming in the National Championship against undefeated Cal St. San Bernardino.

SCOUTING FORT HAYS STATE
The Tigers have started the season 5-3 including a 3-1 weekend at their own Tiger Classic where they played the same four teams as the Hornets. Riley Tinder is leading the Tigers with 69 kills and is averaging 2.56 kills per set. Fort Hays State is hitting .213 on the season and holding their opponents to a .160 hitting percentage

UP NEXT
The Hornets will continue their road trip to Topeka to take on the third ranked Ichabods in the Turnpike Tussle before returning home to start a six game home stand against seventh ranked Central Missouri. Emporia State will play three of four matches against teams in the top ten nationally.
