September 10, 2021-The Emporia State volleyball picked up their first win of the season as they split two matches at the Tiger Classic in Hays, Kan. on Friday. The Hornets fell 3-0 to Adams State before they took a 3-2 win over Black Hills State in their second match.

The Hornets fell 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 to the Grizzlies in their first match of the day.
Adams State jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed in the first set.
Emporia State led 5-2 to start the second set on back to back blocks by
Dorianne Lebron. The Grizzlies then went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-5 lead. Emporia State was up 7-6 before a 4-1 run gave ASU the lead for good.
The Grizzlies used a 7-2 run to start the third set on the way to closing out the match with a 25-20 win.
Megan Stretton led Emporia State with 11 kills while
Dorianne Lebron had nine kills on .300 hitting with four blocks, two of them solo.
Riley Bernskoetter had 29 assists and seven digs while
Rylie Fornelli had 19 digs.
Emporia State 3, Black Hills State 2
The Hornets came from behind in the fifth set to post a 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 22-25, 16-14 win over the Yellowjackets in their final match of the day.
Emporia State used a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead and would not give up the lead for the rest of the first set.
The second set saw nine ties and two lead changes before Black Hills state closed the set on a 9-4 run.
The Hornets fell behind 2-0 to start the third set but went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. The lead would reach eight points twice as Emporia State took a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was tied at 19 before the Yellowjackets closed it out on a 6-3 run to force the fifth and deciding set.
Emporia State trailed 7-3 and 10-6 in the final set before mounting a final rally. Back to back kills by
Shelby Ebert started a 4-0 run capped by
Leah Mach's kill that gave the Hornets a 12-11 lead. With the score tied at 14, Emporia State got kills from Lebron and Stretton to close out the match and pick up their first win of the season.
Shelby Ebert had 21 kills and 11 digs to go with a block assist and two aces for 23.5 points.
Megan Stretton had 14 kills and 15 digs while
Winny Harris added seven kills and five block assists.
Riley Bernskoetter had 41 assists and 19 digs while
Rylie Fornelli had a team high 28 digs.
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they take on Southwest Minnesota State at 10 a.m. and Cameron at 5:00 p.m. in Hays, Kan.
