April 23, 2021-Emporia State inducted 53 student athletes into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society on Thursday night. The national non-profit organization recognizes athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition.

Student-athletes must have achieved the rank of junior or senior, attended Emporia State for two or more semesters, achieved a 3.4 cumulative GPA or higher and earned a varsity letter.

"Being inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma is a top honor for our student-athletes," said Emporia State Deputy Athletic Director and Chapter Adviser Kristy Bayer.  "It has been a challenging year, and for our athletes to be able to sustain academic success is a true testament to their dedication to the classroom. We are extremely proud of their efforts. While we truly love watching them compete, being able to see them receive their pins and cords also brings us great pride."

The mission and objectives of Chi Alpha Sigma are To encourage and reward high academic scholarship of college athletes at four-year accredited colleges and universities; to recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate varsity letter winners; to encourage good citizenship, moral character and friendship among the high academic achievers in college athletics; to recognize and honor the individual athlete, his/her team, sport, athletic department, and college or university; to mentor and to provide leadership to other athletes.

The honor society was founded in 1996 by then DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.
