EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL GETS TWO RUN RULE WINS OVER NEWMAN ON SENIOR DAY

Hornets win16-8, 10-2 on Saturday

April 17, 2021-On Senior Day, Emporia State got the bats out in a double header sweep of Newman as they scored 26 runs in the two run rule victories.  The Hornets won the matinee 16-8 in six innings while taking a 10-2 victory in six innings in the nightcap.
 
Game One
Emporia State had 14 hits and took advantage of four Newman errors in a 16-8 victory in six innings.
 
Kelsey Phillips worked a perfect top of the first and the Hornets got on the scoreboard just five pitches into the bottom of the inning.  Gabby Biondo reached on an infield single with two strikes and after taking ball one, Abbey Ward hit a no doubt homer run over the wall in left to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead.
 
The Hornets would add four runs in the bottom of the second.  Destiny Ojogoh led off with a double before Cassidy Beem worked a walk.  Emma Furnish followed with an RBI single before Biondo singledto load the bases.  Rachel Kauss, playing for the first time since getting injured on March 5, delivered an RBI ground out to make it 4-0.  Phillips then helped herself at the plate with a two run single up the middle as the Hornets took a 6-0 lead after two complete.
 
The Jets would cut the lead in half in the top of the third on an RBI double by Anissa Ramos and a two run home run by Taylor Ullery. The Hornets would get all three runs back in the bottom of the inning. Brittanie Shepherd reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, Ojigoh has hit by a pitch and Beem walked to load the bases.  Emma Furnish plated Shepherd with a sac fly and Biondo reached on a fielder's choice allowing Ojigoh to score.  After Biondo stole second, Ward singled up the middle and Biondo scored to make it 9-3.
 
Newman answered with five runs in the top of the fourth.  Ramos hit a two run single before Ullery hit her second home run in as many innings.  She was followed two pitches later by a home run from Emma Eck as the Jets closed the gap to 9-8 going to the bottom of the fourth.
 
Phillips reached base to lead off the inning when the first baseman could not handle the throw from short and went to second when Kerrigan Dixon walked.  Ojigoh followed with an RBI double to center field.  Beem kept the line moving with an RBI single up the middle and went to second on the throw.  Furnish made it 12-8 with a sac fly before Biondo tripled to left center plating Beem and giving Emporia State a 13-8 lead after four innings.
 
In the fifth Rachel Kauss led off with a single. She went to third when Phillips singled to center and went to second on error on an error by the centerfielder. With one out Shepherd hit a sac fly that scored Kauss.  Ojigoh then reached on a ground ball to third when the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. She then attempted to go to second on the throwback to the pitcher and was thrown out at second but not before Phillips scored to make it 15-8.
 
Phillips faced the minimum in the sixth thanks to a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.  Beem then led off the bottom of the sixth and Furnish hit a double right center, scoring Beem and ending the gameby run rule.
 
Biondo was three for four with two RBI, three runs scored, a triple and a stolen base.  Ojigoh went two for three with two RBI, three runs and a double while Ward was two for four with three RBI, two runs, a stolen base and a home run.  Kelsey Phillips scattered 11 hits over 6.0 innings, allowing eight runs, seven of them earned, while striking out three.  She helped herself at the plate by going two for four with two RBI and two runs scored.
 
Game two
Emporia State scored in every inning but the second on the way to a 10-2 run rule win in the night cap.
 
Newman got on the board in the first when Lauren Kuhrt tripled and scored on an Anissa Ramos single.  Taylor Ullery reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a passed ball.  Emma Eck then hit a single to right but Emma Furnish hit Rachel Kauss who made a perfect cutoff and throw to the plate to get Ullery trying to score from second to keep the score 1-0.
 
With one out in the bottom of the first Abbey Ward walked and went to third on Roni Raines double to left center.  Kerrigan Dixon gave the Hornets the lead with a single to right center that scored both Ward and Raines.
 
The Jets loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the second on a single and two Hornet errors but only got one run out of it.  The one run came on a fielder's choice where Emporia State got a runner out at third.  Lauren Kuhrt was then called out for being out of the batter's box on a bunt attempt and Ramos grounded into a fielder's choice at third to end the inning.
 
Dixon, who started in the circle, would help herself with her bat again in the top of the third.  After Ward walked and Raines was hit by a pitch, Dixon homered to centerfield to give Emporia State a 5-2 lead. Ward hit her second home run of the day with two outs in the bottom of the fourth as the Hornets went up 6-2.
 
In the bottom of the fifth Brittanie Shepherd hit a one out double and Cassidy Beem walked before Furnish hit a two run double to right field.  Ward would single in Furnish and Emporia State took a 9-2 lead to the sixth inning.
 
In the bottom of the sixth Dixon led off with a walk and was replaced at first by McKensy Glass. Glass would go to second on a wild pitch before Kauss hit a double down the left field line allowing her to score and end the game at 10-2.
 
Dixon went three for three at the plate with five RBI, a run scored and a home run while allowing just one earned run and scattering nine hits over 6.0 innings in the circle for the win. Ward was two for tow with three runs, two RBI, two walks and a home run. Furnish had two RBI, and a run scored with one double.
 
Emporia State will be back in action on Sunday when they take on #16 Central Oklahoma.  First pitch of the final home double header of the season is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.
