EMPORIA STATE RUNS INTO BUZZ SAW AT #1 NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE

Hornets fall 100-61 in MIAA Tournament quarterfinals

March 3, 2021-Emporia State again ran into a buzz saw in Maryville, Mo. as Northwest Missouri shot 60.3% from the field in a 100-61 Bearcat victory in the semifinals of the MIAA Basketball Championship Tournament presented by Citizens Bank & Trust.

Northwest jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back as they matched the largest margin of victory in the series between the two teams.  The Hornets closed to 8-5 on a jumper by Jumah'Ri Turner with 16:52 left in the half, but the Bearcats then went on a 16-0 run to take control.   Emporia State was held to a season low 19 points in the first half as they trailed 60-19 at the break.

The deficit hit 50 points in the second half at 93-43 with 7:36 left.  The Hornets were able to outscore NWMSU 18-7 over the final seven minutes for the final score of 100-61.

Jumah'Ri Turner led Emporia State with 12 points, but Tyreek Robinson with a career high 11 points was the only other Hornet in double figures.

Emporia State ends the COVID shortened season 11-12 after going 11-11 in a full MIAA schedule during the regular season.  The 11 wins in the MIAA was a seven game improvement over last season and the biggest jump in the MIAA this year. It was the first time the Hornets have been at least .500 in MIAA play since going 10-9 in 2013-14 and the most wins in conference play since going 12-10 in 2010-11.
