HORNET VOLLEYBALL CLAIMS FIRST MIAA VICTORY

Emporia State defeats Missouri Southern 3-1

October 9, 2021 – Emporia State took on Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon from White Auditorium. The Hornets took down the Lions 3-1.

From the beginning, Emporia State took command of the first set, opening up a 7-1 lead over Missouri Southern. The Hornets would only gain more control from this point as they opened up bigger leads of 14-7 and 21-12 over the Lions. The Hornets would clinch the first set 25-15 on a kill by the setter, Riley Bernskoetter.

In the second set, it was more of the same for the Hornets. While they traded the first few points with the Lions, they would again gain a 14-7 advantage over Missouri Southern. Emporia State finished the second set strongly and would take the set 25-17 to take 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Hornets and Lions traded points until the set was tied 6-6. At this point the Lions would score five straight points to make it 11-6. The Hornets would fight back to make the score 15-14. Missouri Southern would go on a larger run with 9 straight points to get a 24-14 advantage over Emporia State. The Lions would win the set 25-17.

After dropping the third set, the Hornets responded well by getting in front of the Lions early before opening up their largest lead in the match with a 21-10 lead. The two teams would trade points the remainder of the way and the Hornets claimed the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.

Megan Stretton and Orianna Clements each reached double-digit kills with 13 and 12 respectively. Riley Bernskoetter tallied 41 assists in the win and Rylie Fornelli had 14 digs.

Emporia State will return to White Auditorium on Monday evening to conclude their six-match homestand as they take on Fort Hays State. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
