January 16, 2021-The Lady Hornets forced 18 turnovers that led to 23 points in a 73-62 victory over Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon at White Auditorium.

The Lions got out to a 6-2 lead when Emporia State get back to back to back triples from
Karsen Schultz,
Fredricka Sheats and
Emily Weathers to take an 11-6 lead with 6:28 left. The Lady Hornets maintained the lead and took a 22-17 lead into the second quarter.

Neither team scored for the first 2:20 of the second quarter. Sheats broke the scoring drought with a three-pointer following a shot clock violation by the Lions. That would ignite an 11-0 run by the Lady Hornets that lasted to the media timeout as they took a 33-17 lead with 5:00 left in the third quarter. The lead would reach 19 as a Shultz jumper with 2:51 left in the period made it 40-21. Southern would then go on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 40-27 with 22 seconds left before
Tre'Zure Jobe hit a three to give Emporia State a 43-27 lead at the break.

Sheats hit a three with 7:45 left in the third period before the Lions went on a 9-0 run cut the deficit to 49-39 with 2:46 remaining.Â
Emily Weathers hit a pair of three throws with 2:27 left to snap a 5:18 scoring drought for Emporia State and put them back up by 12. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter and the Lady Hornets took a 53-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Amaya Johns converted an old fashioned three-point play with 8:57 left to pull the Lions within 55-49, the closest they had been since early in the first quarter. Madi Stokes hit a pair of free throws with 6:39 left to make it 61-53.Â
Ehlaina Hartman hit a driving layup, was fouled and converted the free throw to put Emporia State back up by double digits and Jobe drove inside to give the Lady Hornets a 66-53 lead with 5:20 left and force a Southern timeout.Â

Stokes pulled the Lions back within 11 on a put back with 4:32 left before Hartman hit a three pointer and Sheats scored inside to put the Lady Hornets up 71-55 with 3:19 remaining. Stokes scored twice more over the next two minutes to cut the deficit back to 11 but Jobe took the ball away from Stokes and went coast to coast with 45 seconds left to give ESU a 73-59 lead. Brooke Stauffer hit a three pointer for Southern to make the final score 73-62.

Fredricka Sheats and
Ehlaina Hartman both had career highs for Emporia State, netting 19 and 17 points respectively. They were joined in double figures by
Karsen Schultz with 15 and
Tre'Zure Jobe with 12 points for the Lady Hornets.

Emporia State will travel to Maryville,Mo. on Tuesday, January 19 for a make-up game at Northwest Missouri. Tip-off in Bearcat Arena is set for 5:00 p.m.
