March 10, 2020-Emporia State continued their home stand with double header split against William Jewell in non-conference play at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won the first game 9-1 in six innings before falling 4-2 in the night cap.
ESU 9, WJC 1 (6 innings)
Kelsey Phillips had a huge game, driving in six runs, as Emporia State run-ruled William Jewell 9-1 in the opener.
Phillips got things started with a bases loaded single to right center that plated
Roni Raines and
Hannah Steeby in the bottom of the first. The Hornets picked up an unearned run in the second when Raines reached on an error with two outs and
Maddy Broxterman scored.
After a sac fly in the fourth got the Cardinals on the board, Phillips delivered a two run shot to centerfield to make it 5-1 in the fifth.
The Hornets sent seven batters to the plate in the sixth inning.
Hannah Steeby hit a sac fly to start the scoring and make it 6-1. With the bases loaded Kauss reached on a fielder's choice as
Destiny Ojigoh was able to score ahead of the throw home. Phillips then ended the game with a bases loaded single through the left side that drovein Raines and
Maddy Broxterman.
Phillips was three for four with six RBI while
Roni Raines went two of three with three runs scored.
Kerrigan Dixon went the distance, giving up just one run on one hit in 6.0 innings to improve to 7-0 o the year.
WJC 4, ESU 2
The Cardinals took a lead in the fourth inning and never relinquished it on the way to a 4-2 victory in the night cap.
Allison Rawls doubled in two runs in the top of the fourth to break a scoreless tie and Lauren Ledbetter followed with an RBI single to make 3-0.
Roni Raines got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth on a two RBI double that scored
Hannah Steeby and
Destiny Ojigoh.
The Cardinals got an insurance run in the to of the eighth thanks to a Sara Lewis sac fly.
Maddy Broxterman led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the third base line to lead off the inning. Steeby then lifted a foul ball deep to left field that was caught and turned into a double play.
Kauss led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to bring the tying run to the plate but the Hornets could not convert as they saw their four game winning streak come to an end.
Brylie Bassett allowed four runs, three earned, on just four hits as she suffered her second loss of the year.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday when they play host to Washburn in the Turnpike Tussle at Trusler. It will be a four game series between the two teams with Friday's games counting in the league standings. First pitch on Friday is set for 2:00 p.m.
