#16 LADY HORNETS SURVIVE IN 74-70 BATTLE WITH MISSOURI WESTERN

Emporia State builds 22 point lead early

January 11, 2020-The #16 Lady Hornets built a 22 point lead and held on for a 74-70 win over Missouri Western in a battle of the two hottest teams in the MIAA entering the day.
 
Emporia State jumped out to an 8-3 lead to open the game and then used a 10-0 run to end the period and take a 21-7 lead to the second quarter.
 
The Lady Hornets would go up 26-11 on a fast break three-pointer by Tre'Zure Jobe with 7:06 left.  The Griffons closed to within 11 on a Simone Rodney three with 4:59 left before Emporia State went on another 10-0 run to take a 36-15 lead with 1:21 left in the half.  Daley Handy gave the Lady Hornets their largest lead at 39-17 with 34 seconds left but an Anastacia Johnson three-pointer made it 39-20 at the break.
 
The Griffons used a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 47-35 with 2:26 left in the third quarter.  The Lady Hornets responded with a 7-0 run of their own and Jobe's put back with 16 seconds left gave Emporia State a 54-35 lead.  Kylee Williams nailed a three-pointer with eight seconds left to pull the Griffons to within 54-38 going to the fourth quarter.
 
That would start a 7-0 run for Western as they closed to within 54-42 just 53 seconds into the fourth quarter.  Emporia State responded again, using an 8-0 run to go back up by 20 points at 6:30 left on Morgan Laudan steal and layup. MWSU went on a 14-0 run as ESU missed eight straight shots while the Griffons went four of seven from the field and five of five from the free throw line to pull within 65-59 with 2:48 left. 
 
Jobe broke the run with a three pointer 17 seconds later and Karsen Schultz scored inside to push the Lady Hornets lead back to 11 points with 1:38 remaining. Corbyn Cunningham scored to cut the lead to single digits with 1:26 left. Katrina Roenfeldt hit a three-pointer followed by an old fashioned three-point play from Cunningham with 23.1 seconds left to make it 70-67. Mounsey and Jobe went four of four from the line in the final 21 seconds to ice the 74-70 win.
 
Tre'Zure Jobe led all scorers with 22 points to lead four Lady Hornets in double figures  Morgan Laudan had a double double with 13 points and ten rebounds while Kali Martin added 12 points and Mollie Mounsey ten points. 
 
The #16 Lady Hornets will travel to Hays, Kan. on Wednesday for a top 20 showdown with #13 Fort Hays State.  Tip-off from Gross Memorial Coliseum is set for 5:30 p.m.
