April 5, 2019-Emporia State saw their six game winning streak come to a halt with a double header sweep by Southwest Baptist on Friday in Bolivar, Mo. The Hornets lost game one 5-3 and fell 3-2 in the second game.
GAME ONE
After three scoreless innings by both teams, the Hornets got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Destiny Ojigoh singled in Hannah Steeby and then came home on Brittanie Shepherd's single. The Bearcats broke through with a solo home run by Morgan McMullin in the bottom of the fourth. Ojigoh walked with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth to force in Maddy Broxterman to give Emporia State a 3-1 lead.
Paige St. Pierre began the Bearcats comeback with a lead off double in the bottom of the sixth. Montana Mesler got a strikeout on the next batter before M Schellert singled and went to second on an error. M Aguiler then singled in St. Pierre to pull SBU within a run. McMullin followed with an RBI single to tie the score and force a Hornet pitching change. Kelsey Phillips replaced Mesler in the circle and got a line out to short but Steeby's attempt to get the double play was errant and allowed two runs to score. Steeby singled with one out in the top of the seventh but the inning ended with a double play as SBU won 5-3.
GAME TWO
Emporia State started quickly in the nightcap with Gabby Biondo hitting a lead off single. She scored when Kelsey Phillips reached on an error. Phillips was out as she tried to go to third base on the error. The lead held up until the fifth when SBU's Karen Hillenburg reached on an error and scored on Paige St. Pierre's single. The Bearcats took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Morgan McMullin and a sac fly by L Strobel.
Hannah Steeby and Cassidy Beem got lead off walks to start the top of the seventh. Mackenzie Thornton pinch ran for Beem and she and Steeby stole bases to put runners at second and third with no outs. With one out Maddy Broxterman reached on an error that allowed Steeby to score. Thornton was thrown out trying to score as Kailee Odegard reached on a fielder's choice. A wild pitch allowed Odegard to get to second but Broxterman could not score on it. Shepherd then struck out to end the game.
The Hornets will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Central Missouri. First pitch from the South Recreation Complex is set for 12:00 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.
