March 8, 2019- Emporia State Softball split their double header against Lincoln on Friday in Andover, Kan. The Hornets fell 10-7 in the first game of the day before getting the run rule win 9-1 in five innings in game two.
Game One
The Blue Tigers got on the board first as Bekah Kirker and Jordan Lawson opened the game with back-to-back home runs to take a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.
In the bottom of the first, Kenzie Garvin led off with a single for the Hornets and advanced to second on a single from Gabby Biondo. Garvin got the Hornets on the board as the Hornets used a double steal and she scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Biondo came home to score on a fielder's choice allowing Cassidy Beem to reach first. Beem was driven home when Hannah Steeby sent a two run home run over the fence in left center field to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead before the final out of the inning.
Lincoln regained the lead in the top of the second inning with eight runs on seven hits and three Hornet errors. This would cap scoring for the Blue Tigers in the game.
The Hornets fought to get back into the game with one run on two hits in the bottom of the third. Destiny Ojigoh singled up the middle with one out on the board and advanced to third on a double from Kailee Odegard. Ojigoh would score on a ground out from Rachel Kauss to cut the Blue Tigers lead to 10-5 after three innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets wrapped up scoring in the game with two runs on three hits and one Blue Tiger error. Steeby led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Ojigoh grounded out to short stop for the second out advancing Steeby to third when a throwing error allowed her to score. Odegard doubled to left center and scored the Hornets final run as Kauss doubled down the left field line. Neither team would score in the final two innings as the Hornets fell 10-7 in game one.
The Hornets had 14 hits in the game led by Hannah Steeby with three hits and two runs in the game. Kailee Odegard and Rachel Kauss added three runs each while Odegard notched one run for the Hornets. Kelsey Phillips started on the mound for the Hornets and received the loss as she pitched 1.0 inning allowing eight runs on six hits. Brylie Bassett finished the game with 6.0 innings allowing just two runs on ten hits.
Game Two
The Hornets got on the board first and never trailed in the game. In the bottom of the first inning, Gabby Biondo led off with a single to short stop, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Kenzie Garvin put down a sac bunt to bring Biondo home to score before Hannah Steeby was walked. Steeby stole second and scored on a double from Cassidy Beem to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
The Blue Tigers got their only run of the game on a home run from Gabi McGinty in the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the third, Garvin led off with a single to third base. Kailee Odegard reached first and advanced to third on a throwing error allowing Garvin to score. Odegard scored on a single from Steeby. Steeby stole second and third before scoring on a double from Rachel Kauss. Maddy Broxterman tripled to right center to bring Kauss home to extend the Hornets lead to 6-1 after three.
The Hornets capped scoring in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on one hit and one Liocoln error. Garvin reached on an error by first base and advanced to second on a walk from Steeby. Beem ended scoring with a three run home run en route to the Hornets 9-1 run rule win in game two.
The Hornets had eight hits in the game led by Cassidy Beem with two hits and one run including a three run home run in the bottom of the fourth. Montana Messler pitched the complete game going 5.0 innings allowing just one hits and one run with nine K's.
The Hornets will be back in action on Wednesday, March 13 as they travel to Liberty, Mo. to take on William Jewell.
