March 2, 2019-The Lady Hornets could not overcome Central Oklahoma hitting six of seven three pointers in the first five minutes in a 78-62 loss to the Bronchos on Saturday afternoon in Edmond, Okla. With the loss Emporia State will be the fifth seed in the MIAA Tournament and will take on Washburn on Friday night in the tournament quarterfinals.
Emporia State scored the first points of the game on a coast to coast drive by Tyra Jones and UCO called a timeout with 9:06 left in the opening quarter. The Bronchos scored the next 18 points to take an 18-2 lead with 4:56 left in the quarter. The teams played even the rest of the period as Central Oklahoma led 24-8 after one.
The Bronchos scored the first seven points of the second quarter to go up 31-8 before Brittany Kramer stopped the run with a three-pointer at the 6:20 mark. UCO would hit three more treys in the final 5:29 as they took a 44-20 lead to the locker room.
Two more Broncho three-pointers gave UCO a 50-20 lead 1:46 into the third quarter. Emporia State then went on an 11-0 run to pull within 50-31 with 5:52 left in the quarter. UCO answered with a 9-0 run to go back up 59-31 with 2:03 remaining in the period and took a 63-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hornets would have another 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull within 16 with just under three minutes left but that would be as close as they could get.
Kali Martin led Emporia State with 17 points including a career high five made three-pointers. Addie Lackey was the only other Lady Hornet in double figures with 11 points.
Emporia State will be the fifth seed and play Washburn at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The Lady Hornets have won 20 of their last 23 games in the MIAA Tournament.
