March 15, 2018-Both Emporia State tennis teams fell 4-3 on Friday afternoon to Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo.
The Hornet men picked up the doubles point to get things started. Gerard Pont and Ollie Dixon won 7-5 at #1 while Charles Gortzounian and Taylor Nelson picked up a 6-4 win at #2 doubles. Five of the six singles matches went to a third set tiebreaker but Emporia State would only win two of the four matches. Gortzounian won at #1 singles 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) while Luis Maia won 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) at #6 singles.
The women had basically the same result, winning the doubles point and two of the six singles matches. Cyrielle Peyroche and Jessica Purdy won 6-0 at #1 doubles followed by Karen Santiago and Victoria Mackova winning 6-4 at #2 doubles. Purdy was victorious 6-1, 6-3 at #2 singles and Peyroche won 7-5, 6-3 at #4 to round out the scoring for the Hornet women.
Emporia State will open MIAA play on Sunday, March 17 in St. Patrick's Day duals at Northwest Missouri. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
