February 26, 2019-The Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams continued their strong start to the spring season with a pair of wins at William Jewell on Tuesday afternoon at Clayview Country Club in Kansas City, Mo.
The Hornet women swept the Cardinals 7-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Jessica Purdy and Cyrielle Peyroche won 6-3 at #1 doubles, Karen Santiago and Viktoria Mackova picked up a 6-4 win at #2 doubles while Silvana Caceres and Shannen Meyer got a 6-0 win at #3 doubles to give Emporia State the doubles point.Â
Mackova won 6-4, 6-4 at #1 singles while Caceres picked up a come from behind 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) win at #2 singles. Purdy and Peyroche got straight sets wins at #3 and #4 singles, Purdy winning 6-0, 6-0 while Peyroche won 6-4, 6-2. Santiago and Meyer also had straight set wins, Santiago 6-1, 6-0 at #5 and Meyer 6-1, 6-2 at #6 singles.
The Hornet men moved to 3-0 on the year with a 6-1 win over the Cardinals. Gerard Pont and Oliver Dixon won 6-4 at #1 doubles while Luis Maia and Anton Levanovich won 6-2 to give Emporia State the doubles point.
Charles Gortzounian won 6-0, 7-6 at #1 singles while Dixon picked up a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win at #3 singles. Nelson Taylor won 6-1, 6-4 at #4 singles, Mai picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at #5, and Andy Graf wrapped things up with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #6 singles.
The Hornets dual with Ottawa scheduled for Friday has been postponed and will be made up at a later date. Both the men and women were scheduled to play Rockhurst in Emporia on Saturday. Those duals have been moved to the Clayview Country Club. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
