February 22, 2019-The Emporia State men's and women's tennis teams are set to open the "spring" portion of their schedule on Saturday against McKendree at the Woodside Tennis Club in Westwood, Kan.
The Hornet men were picked fourth and the women ninth in the 2019 MIAA Preseason Tennis Coaches Polls while the McKendree men were picked fifth in the GLVC East Division and the women were slated for sixth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Preseason Coaches Polls.
Both Emporia State teams opened the season with wins over McPherson in the fall. The Bearcats were scheduled to play Rockhurst on Friday afternoon to begin their season.
The Hornet men went 11-7 last year and finished fifth in the MIAA with a 1-4 record. Charles Gortzounian was 14-2 in singles action for Emporia State last year, going 7-1 at #2 and 6-1 at #3 singles.
The Emporia State women were 1-12 last season and finished tenth in the MIAA. They played a majority of the season with only four players due to injuries. Two of those four players return this season - Silvana Caceres and Shannen Myer along with Camila Ramos who missed the season with an injury.
