February 14, 2019- The Lady Hornets held on for the 71-64 win over Central Oklahoma on Thursday. Three players in scoring in double digits led the way for the Lady Hornets win in White Auditorium.
The Bronchos got on the board first and pushed out ahead to an 8-0 lead before the Lady Horents used a 8-0 run of their own to tie the game at 8-8 with 6:19 on the clock. The Lady Hornets never led in the first quarter and would trail 16-14 heading to the break.
After a 9-0 run to open the second quarter, the Lady Hornets led 23-16 with 8:20 left in the half. The Bronchos regained the lead over the Lady Hornets at 28-27 with 1:55 remaining in the second before the Lady Hornets finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 35-30 at the half.
The Lady Hornets pushed their run from the first half up to a 13-2 run to lead 41-30 with 6:54 left in the third quarter. Emporia State's largest lead came with 1:21 remaining in the third after a Jessica Wayne free throw gave the Lady Hornets the 54-37 lead. In the final minute, the Bronchos closed the gap to 54-42 in favor of the Lady Hornets heading to the final frame.
After both teams went scoreless through the first 1:30 of the fourth quarter, the Bronchos broke the silence with a three pointer from Blake Blessington to come within single digits at 54-45 with 8:30 on the clock. The Lady Hornets answered two possessions later when Emily Miller knocked down a three with 7:30 left. The Bronchos closed within six with 3:10 on the clock, but the Lady Hornets used back-to-back three point possessions on a three from Wayne and an old fashioned three point play from Tyra Jones to push their lead back to 12 with 1:58 remaining and would hold on for the 71-64 win.
The Lady Hornets outshot the Bronchos 40.3% - 33.8% from the field but were outshot 36.1% - 32.1% from beyond the arc. Emily Miller led the Lady Hornets with 23 points. Miller was joined in double digits by Kali Martin and Jessica Wayne with 12 points each. Tyra Jones led the team with nine rebounds.
Emporia State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 16 as they play host to Northeastern State in White Auditorium. Tip off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
