November 22, 2019-Emporia State and Rockhurst battled through40 minutes of regulation and two overtimes before the Hawks were able to pull away for a 109-100 double overtime victory over the Hornets in White Auditorium on Friday night.

The Hornets got out to 22-16 lead in the first half before Rockhurst went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-22 midway through the first half. The Hawks would stretch the lead to eight points at 37-29 with 5:23 left in the half. Emporia State would close to within 44-41 with 58 seconds left on a Jumah'ri Turner three pointer only to see Rockhurst score the final five points of the half to match their biggest lead going to the locker room.

The teams would trade scores for the first seven minutes of the second half before the Hornets went on a 13-2 run and took a 63-61 lead with 9:39 left in the game. Emporia State took a 78-73 lead on
Devin Rottweiler's three-pointer from the corner with 1:37 left. Nick Volz drew a foul on an offensive rebound with 1:19 left and hit both free throws. After a missed jumper by the Hornets Curtis Lewis hit a three pointer to tie the game and the Hornets called timeout with 48.4 seconds left. Turner gave the Hornets an 80-78 lead with a jumper in the lane with 24 seconds left. Quinton Curry missed a shot inside for Rockhurst but Volz got the offensive rebound and scored inside to tie the game at 80 with six seconds left. Turner's three-pointer rimmed out and the teams went to the first overtime.

Rottweiler hit another three-pointer to open the extra frame for the Hornets only to see Rockhurst go on a 7-1 run to take an 87-84 lead with 2:33 left in the period.
Keyon Thomas drained a three-pointer to beat the shot clock and tie the game at 87. Curry converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:42 left to give Rockhurst a 90-87 lead. Turner scored the next four points and Thomas hit two free throws with 24.4 seconds left to cap a 6-0 run and give Emporia State a 93-90 lead. Curry got an offensive rebound for the Hawks and was fouled with 16.3 seconds left. He hit both free throws  with 16.3 to make it a one point game.Â
Justin Williams was fouled with 12.6 seconds left and hit one of two to give the Hornets a 94-92 lead. Lewis missed a three pointer but Curry grabbed the rebound and scored to tie the game with 5.1 seconds left. Turner's three-pointer at the buzzer was off and the teams went to a second overtime.

The teams traded free throws in the first minute of the second overtime before Thomas scored inside to Emporia State a 98-96 lead with 3:49 left. Chris Hamil gave the Hawks a 99-98 lead with a three pointer with 3:19 left. Turner hit two free throws with 2:20 left to pull within 101-100. Hamil hit another three-pointer with 2:09 remaining to go up two possessions at 104-100. After a Hornet turnover Curry was fouled on the baseline going up for a layup and after a lengthy video replay it was determined to be a flagrant foul on
Duncan Fort. Lewis replaced Curry at the free throw line and hit two free throws to put the Hawks up 106-100 with 54.5 seconds left. Rockhurst got the ball out of bounds after the free throws and Curry would hit three of four free throws in the final 53 seconds for the final margin of 109-100.

Jumah'Ri Turner led Emporia State with 30 points as four Hornets scored in double figures and a total of nine scored in the game. He was joined in double figures by
Keyon Thomas with 23points,
Justin Williams with 13 and
Devin Rottweiler with 11 points. Rotweiler had nine rebounds while Turner and
Mason Thiessen each had eight boards. The Hornets had 12 turnover to just seven for the Hawks, but Rockhurst outscored Emporia State 15-3 in points off turnovers.

The Hornets are backin action on Tuesday, November 26 against William Jewell in the MIAA Thanksgiving Challenge. Tip-off from Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City is set for 8:15 p.m.
