November 2, 2019-Emporia State could only muster 249 yards of total offense in a 37-17 loss to Washburn on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets were held to a season low 91 yards passing in the game.
Washburn took the opening drive and went 83 yards in 12 plays and took a 7-0 lead on a six yard touchdown pass from Mitch Schurig to Collin Wilson with 8:58 left in the quarter. Emporia State answered 29 seconds later when
Carlos Grace broke through for a 70 yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7. It looked like a shootout was ensuing as the Ichabods would go 71 yards on three plays and took the lead on a four yard touchdown run by Zach Willis to go up 14-7.
The teams traded punts on the next five possessions with the Ichabods coming out on top in the battle for field position. They would go 58 yards on five plays to take a 21-7 lead on a pass from Schurig to Taylon Peters with 11:14 left in the half. The Hornets responded with a 14 play drive that covered 68 yards before
Clark Schoonover hit a 24yard field goal to pull within 21-10 with 6:29 left in the half. The Ichabods would score 18 seconds left in the half on a five yard pass from Schurig to James Letcher, Jr. to take a 28-10 lead into the half.
The Hornets went three and out to start the second half and
Ross Brungardt's punt took a backwards bounce to end up at the Emporia State 46 yard line. The Ichabods went 46 yards in eight plays, aided by three penalties by the Hornets, to take a 35-10 lead on a Zach Willis one yard run with 9:49 left in the third quarter. After trading three and outs again, Emporia State went on a 13 play, 81 yard drive capped by a one yard quarterback sneak by
Dalton Cowan to make it 35-17 with 58 seconds left in the third.
The final score of the game would come with 3:42 left in the game. After a Lane Spike punt was downed at the one yard line Cowan connected with
JT Mackey for a 61 yard completion but it was called back due to a hold in the endzone that resulted in a safety as Washburn took a 37-17 lead. The Ichabods would then run out the final 3:36 of the game for the victory as they snapped a four game Hornet winning streak in the Turnpike Tussle.
Dawson Hammes and
Lawson Holbert shared game high honors with 11 tackles each for the Hornets.
Carlos Grace had 97 yards rushing on 14 carries with five receiving yards on three catches.
Cole Schumacher was the leading receiver for the Hornets with three catches for 32 yards.
Dalton Cowan was 13 of 24 for 91 yards passing.
Emporia State is back in action on November 9 when they travel to Missouri Southern. Kick-off from Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Mo. is set for 3:00 p.m. in the last road trip of the year for the Hornets.
