January 20, 2019- The Lady Hornet women's basketball team fell 64-62 to Nebraska Kearney in White Auditorium on Sunday. After their lowest scoring half of the season, the Lady Hornets strong shooting display could not overcome the deficit in the second half.
The Lopers scored the first points of the game with 9:14 on the clock and would take a 6-0 lead before Tiana Moala made a layup with 7:39 in the first to put the Lady Hornets on the board. After shooting just 3-11 from the field, the Lady Hornets trailed 22-7 at the break.
The Lady Hornets struck first in the second quarter when Tyra Jones knocked down a jumper with 8:52 on the clock. This was the Lady Hornets only scoring in the quarter until 3:06 remaining as the Lopers used a 5-0 run to extend their lead. At the Half, the Lady Hornets trailed 34-15 after shooting just 22.2% from the field.
After the Lopers opened the third quarter with a three pointer with 9:35 on the clock, the Lady Hornets used a 12-3 run over the next 3:17 to close the gap to 40-27 with 6:18 remaining. With the Lady Hornets chipping away at the lead, the two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the quarter to a score of 50-35 favoring the Lopers.
The Lady Hornets opened the fourth quarter scoring with a jumper from Addie Lackey with 9:41 on the clock. Including the final points of the third quarter, the Lady Hornets pushed their run to 12-0 over 6:46 and brought the Lopers lead down to 50-49.
The Lady Hornets took their first lead of the game with 2:42 remaining after Jones knocked down two free throws. The Lopers regained the lead on the ensuing possession and used a 7-0 run to lead 60-54 with 1:31 on the clock. Jones made a layup with 47 seconds left to bring the Lopers lead to just three. The Lopers hit 4-6 free-throws as the Lady Hornets were forced to foul to stop the clock. At the buzzer, Lackey knocked down a buzzer beating three as the Lady Hornets would fall 64-62.
The Lady Hornets outshot the Lopers 41.1% to 36.2% in the game, 36.4% to 26.9% from three. Tyra Jones led the Lady Hornets with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Emily miller followed closely with 15 points while Tiana Moala added 10 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks.
The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 23 as they travel to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on Pittsburg State. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow.
