September 7, 2018- Emporia State Soccer fell 4-2 on Friday to Missouri S&T in the MIAA/GLVC Crossover in St. Charles, Mo. The Hornets are now 2-1-0 on the season and will look to bounce back on Sunday.
The Hornets were out-shot 16-10 in the match along with the Miners taking five corner kicks to the Hornets just four. It was a physical match throughout with the Miners committing 18 fouls and receiving four yellow cards while the Hornets committed ten fouls and received one yellow card. All five yellow cautions were given during the second half of play.
First Half
The Miners got on the board first with a goal from Morgan Sikora from Taylor Vollmer in the 21st minute of the match. Olivia Miller would take a rebound assist from Denaya Evans for a Hornet goal in the 39th minute to equalize the two teams at 1-1. The Miners answered quickly when Mikaela Mockenhaupt scored unassisted in the 42nd minute to regain the lead at 2-1.
Second Half
Taylor Vollmer extended the Miners lead to 3-1 on an assist from Julia Crets which would prove to be the game winning goal. Maria Walden closed the gap to 3-2 for the Hornets in the 62nd minute with a shot from seven yards out assisted by Gaby Crowell but it would not be enough for the Hornets as Morgan Sikora sealed the game with a goal for the Miners in the 80th minute to take the 4-2 win.
The Hornets were led by Maria Walden and Olivia Miller each with one goal in the match while Gaby Crowell and Denaya Evans had one assist each. Jillian Patton played the full 90 minutes in goal and had two saves.
The Hornets will be back in action on Sunday, September 9 as they take on Drury in St. Charles, Mo. at the MIAA/GLVC Crossover.
