September 16, 2018- Emporia State Soccer defeated rival Washburn in a 3-0 shut-out on Sunday in the Turnpike Tussle. This was the Hornets third shut-out win of the season.
The Hornets came out firing as they out-shot the Ichabods 11-3 in the first half. Maria Walden sent a free kick from about 20 yards straight out into the top of the net to give the Hornets the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the match. The Hornets extended their lead when Makayla Brady sent a shot from the left side into the back of the net unassisted in the 30th minute. The Hornets went into the half holding their lead at 2-0.
Emporia States Aislinn Hughes sent a shot from near 20 yards out into the back of the net in the 55th minute to extend the Hornets lead to 3-0 over the Ichabods. After the goal, the second half became a physical battle between the two teams with three yellow cards handed out in the period. Hornet, Jacki Martinek received a caution yellow card in the 61st minute of the match while Washburns Olivia Grasso received one in the 71st minute and Ryanne Serrone-Brown received one in the 77th minute of the match.
The Hornets had three different players score in the match. Maria Walden, Makayla Brady and Aislinn Hughes each had one goal for the Hornets. Jillian Patton played 70:15 minutes in goal for the Hornets with one save to record her third shut-out of the season.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, September 21 as they play host to Nebraska Kearney in Emporia, Kan. at the ESU Pitch.
