Hornets fall to Mavericks, defeat Hawks

September 1, 2018- Emporia State Volleyball split day two of the Rockhurst Classic as they fell 3-1 to Colorado Mesa on Saturday morning and defeated host school #6 Rockhurst 3-2 in the afternoon game. This is the first time since October 23, 2013 when the Hornets defeated #3 Central Missouri in White Auditorium that the Hornets have upset a top ten nationally ranked team.

Vs. CMU
The Mavericks took control of the first set early with an 8-2 run after being tied at 3-3. The Hornets were unable to draw within five points in the remainder of the set and fell 25-15 in set one. The Hornets fought back through a battle in set two to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 set win.

In set three Colorado Mesa took the lead early and only saw two lead changes as the Hornets took the lead at 8-7 before the Mavericks regained the lead at 11-10 and held on for the 25-20 set win. The Hornets were unable to answer in set four as the Mavericks used the momentum out of the locker room to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

The Hornets were led by Jamie Hauptman and Mikayla Simons each with nine kills. Yuchen Du led the Hornets with 19 assists while Emma Dixon added 16 and Allie Maloney led with 16 digs followed by Dixon and Taylor Otting each with nine digs.

Vs. RU
The Hornets took control of the match early when they battled to a 25-22 set one win with 17 kills to take the lead 1-0 over Rockhurst. After the Hornets jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in set two, Rockhurst went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 7-7. The Hawks continued their hot scoring streak through the set to take the 25-13 set win and tie the match at 1-1. The Hornets were able to bounce back and keep set three close at 15-16 before the Hawks made a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 20-15. The Hornets rallied back to score the final seven points of the set and take the 25-23 set win and 2-1 match lead.

The Hawks took an early lead in the fourth set at 8-4 before going on a 10-4 run to lead 18-8. The Hornets were unable to overcome the deficit in the set and fell 25-11 to tie the match at 2-2. In the fifth set, the Hawks scored the first four points before the Hornets got on the board on an attack error by Rockhurst. The final set was a battle to the finish with eight ties and three lead changes on the way to the Hornets 19-17 win to take the match 3-2.

The Hornets were led by Jamie Hauptman with 20 kills followed by Yuchen Du with 15. Emma Dixon led the Hornets with 26 assists while Du sealed her triple-triple with 24 assists to go with her 15 kills and 15 digs. Julia Joseph led the Hornets with 20 digs.

The Hornets will be back in action on September 7 as they travel to Shawnee, Okla. to take on East Central University and Oklahoma Baptist in the MIAA-GAC Challenge. The Hornets will then play on Saturday, September 8 in Edmond, Okla. against Arkansas Tech and Southeastern Oklahoma State to wrap up the tournament.
