March 23, 2018- Emporia State fell in both games of their doubleheader against Lindenwood on Friday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo. The Hornets lost game one 7-1 and then fell 17-5 in five innings in the nightcap.
LWU 7, ESU 1
After two scoreless innings, Cassidy Beem got the Hornets on the board with a solo home run in the top of the third to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead. The Lions would respond with three runs in the bottom of the frame, plus another run in the bottom of the fourth as the Hornets trailed 4-1. The Hornets had two baserunners in the final three innings and the Lions were able to get a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth as the Hornets fell 7-1 in game one.
Cassidy Beem was one for two at the plate, hitting her first home run as a Hornet. Kenzie Garvin, Annie Rockley, and Kelsey Phillips each had a hit for the Hornets. Phillips pitched six innings in the circle for Emporia State, allowing five earned runs on ten hits.
LWU 17, ESU 5
In the nightcap, the Hornets scored five runs on nine hits and had one error. After the Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the first, the Hornets were able to pick up two runs in the top of the second. After a leadoff walk to begin the second, the Hornets got back-to-back singles from Hailey Cope and Destiny Ojigoh. Cope would pick up an RBI on her hit and then come around to score on a Lions' error. Ojigoh would come home to score on another error as the Hornets cut the Lions' lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the second, Lindenwood picked up eight runs on seven hits in the inning to push their lead to 13-3. The Hornets responded in the top of the third, scoring two runs on a double off the bat of Hailey Cope. After the Lions scored four runs in the fourth, the Hornets were unable to extend the game in the fifth and fell 17-5 in five innings.
Hailey Cope was a perfect three for three at the plate with two RBI and picked up her ninth double of the year. McKenna Davis had two hits and a double in the game. Destiny Ojigoh was two for three with an RBI and a run scored. Caitlin VanVleck had two runs scored, plus a hit and a walk. Mackenzie Thornton pitched 2.1 innings of relief for the Hornets and had two strikeouts.
The Hornets continue their weekend road trip as they play a doubleheader against Lincoln on Saturday, March 24. First pitch from Jefferson City, Mo. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
