EMPORIA STATE MEN OPEN SPRING TENNIS SEASON WITH WIN OVER OTTAWA

Hornets come from behind to knock off Braves

Box Score March 1, 2018-After trailing following double action the Emporia State men rolled off wins in five of six singles patches to take a 6-3 victory over Ottawa on Thursday at the Kossover Tennis Complex/Milton Courts.

Matheus Mota and Paddy Cameron fell in #1 doubles 8-3 to Ottawa's Lukas Michenka and Karlo Skvorc 8-3 before Emporia State's Janne Jacobi and Taylor Nelson evened the match with an 8-3 win at #3 doubles over Mekasha Tadious and Virgil Reed.  Ottawa took a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 victory by Keiran President and Ronald Rufyikiri over Oli Dixon and Charles Gourtzonian at #2 doubles.

Gourtzonian evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Rufyikiri at #2 singles but President put the Braves back up 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Mota evened things again for the Hornets with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Skvorc at #3 singles before Dixon put Emporia State up 4-3 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Michenka at #1 singles.  Jacobi clinched the win for Emporia State with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Reed at #6 singles. Anton Levanovich closed out the match with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win at #5 singles over Tadious.

With the win Emporia State improves to 8-1 on the season and picks up their first win of the spring.  Both the Hornet men and women are scheduled to play an exhibition match against Cowley CC on Saturday before they each take on Ark.-Ft. Smith on March 9 at the EHS Courts.
