EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL GOES 0-2 ON FINAL DAY OF THE LUBBOCK SPORTS CLASSIC

Hornets fall to Midwestern and Chadron State

February 4, 2018- Emporia State Softball fell Sunday to Midwestern State and Chadron State on the final day of the Lubbock Sports Classic. 

In the early game the Hornets jumped out to a quick start scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Midwestern State answered in the top of the second to bring the score within 2-1. After exchanging two full scoreless innings Midwestern scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the 5-2 lead and would hold on through the final innings. 

Montana Mesler pitched a full game for the Hornets allowing five runs on six hits with six strikeouts. At the plate Danielle Sprinkle and Hailey Cope each had one hit and one run. Sprinkle drove in Cope with her two run home run in the first inning for the Hornets only two runs.

In the noon game the Hornets got on the board in the top of the first before allowing four runs in the bottom of the inning. The teams exchanged three scoreless innings before the Hornets scored one run in the top of the fifth inning. Emporia State scored another run in the sixth and tied the game in the top of the seventh. Chadron State took the lead back with an RBI single to left center field in the bottom of the seventh.

Mackenzie Thornton pitched one third innings for the Hornets allowing four runs on five hits before she was replaced by Kelsey Phillips. Phillips pitched six and one third innings for the hornets allowing one run on five hits. At the plate for the Hornets Annelize Rockley, Kenzi Garvin, McKennzie Davis and Kelsie Phillips each scored one run.

The Hornets will be back in action February 10 as they take on Arkansas Tech in the Ark-Monticello DII Challenge in Bentonville, Arkansas.
