February 17, 2018- Emporia State lost both games on Saturday at the 6-State Classic at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets lost the first game of the day 10-7 to #14 Missouri-St. Louis, followed by a 6-2 loss to Henderson State.
UMSL 10, ESU 7
The Tritons started off the scoring by getting a run in the top of the first inning. The Hornets continued their streak of scoring in the first inning to ten games when Kenzie Garvin scored in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. After giving up a run in the top of the 2nd, Kelsey Phillips was able to put up zeroes in the next three innings. In the bottom of the 5th, the Hornets were able to put together a big inning as they scored five runs in four hits to give Emporia State a 6-2 lead. The Tritons would answer with a big inning of their own in the top of the 6th as they scored seven runs in the inning to put them back ahead 9-6 and then added an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning. The Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7
th and Caitlyn VanVleck got a run back with an RBI single up the middle to bring the tying run t the plate. Destiny Ojigoh was just thrown out at first to end the rally.
Danielle Sprinkle was two for three at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Annie Rockley, McKenna Davis, and VanVleck each had two hits and an RBI. Phillips went 5.1 innings pitched, striking out three hitters and giving up seven runs. Destiny Ojigoh pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up two earned runs.
HSU 6, ESU 2
The Hornets would see their first inning scoring streak end in their game against Henderson State. After getting 11 hits in the first game, the Hornets would go hitless in the first two innings against HSU. The Reddies would open up the scoring in the top of the 3rd and pick up two more runs in the 4th. Trailing 6-0 going into the bottom of the 6th, the Hornets would get on the board with a pair of RBI groundouts from Annie Rockley and Destiny Ojigoh.
Rockley went one for three at the plate, picking up her sixth RBI on the year. Kenzie Garvin had one hit with one run scored, giving her a total of 11 runs on the season. Montana Mesler fell to 2-3 on the year after giving up six runs in 5.2 innings. Kelsey Phillips pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings to close out the game for the Hornets.
Emporia State continues the 6-State Classic on Sunday, February 18 with games against Southern Arkansas at 1:00 p.m. and William Jewell at 3:00 p.m.
