EMPORIA STATE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO WASHBURN IN THE TURNPIKE TUSSLE

Lady Hornets fall 74-59 to Ichabods

February 13, 2018-The Lady Hornets had 20 turnovers that led to 22 Ichabod points in a 74-59 loss to Washburn on Tuesday evening in White Auditorium.  The loss snapped a 12 game winning streak in the Turnpike Tussle by Emporia State.
 
The Ichabods got out to a 10-4 lead just over four minutes into the game and led 12-7 with 5:19 left in the first half.  The Lady Hornets then went on a 16-4 run to take a 23-16 lead with 2:29 left in the half. Marissa Preston hit three three-pointers during the run and Emporia State would take a 25-20 lead into the second quarter.
 
Neither team scored in the early going of the second quarter with only three baskets between the two teams in the first five and a half minutes.  Morgan Laudan scored inside with 4:25 left to give Emporia State a 31-22 lead.  A Tatum Graves layup with 2:43 left made it 35-26 Emporia State but that would be the last score of the quarter.  The Ichabods hit three three-pointers with two coming after Lady Hornet turnovers to tie the game at 35 headed to the half.
 
A Taylor Blue layup extended the run to 11-0 and gave the Ichabods a 37-35 lead with 9:30 left in the third quarter.  Tyra Jones broke the run but Washburn would score the next six point to go up 43-37 with 6:55 left in the period.  Jones twice cut the lead to four, first on two free throws and then on a jumper with 6:07 left.  The Lady Hornets would not score another basket until the 2:56 mark and when Jacee Kramer scored Emporia State only trailed 49-44.  That would be the only bucket of the final 6:07 of the quarter as the Lady Hornets trailed 54-46 going into the fourth quarter.
 
The Ichabods would push their lead to 17 points with 5:12 left when Emporia State went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 68-58 on a Jacee Kramer three-pointer with 1:39 left.  Washburn would then hit seven of ten free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
 
Jacee Kramer led Emporia State with 16 points while Tyra Jones added 15 points and nine rebounds.
 
Emporia State will close the season with three road games starting on Thursday at Southwest Baptist.  Tip-off in Bolivar, Mo. is set for 5:30 p.m.
