#24 LADY HORNETS FALL IN TOP 25 MATCH-UP AT #9 FORT HAYS STATE

Fort Hays State has late 13-0 run to take 84-74 win over Emporia State

December 8, 2018-In a top 25 match-up the #24 Lady Hornets gave up a late 13-0 run in an 84-74 loss at #9 Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon.
 
Emporia State got off to a fast start, scoring the first five points and led 14-7 with 5:34 left in the first.  The Tigers used an 11-0 run to take an 18-14 lead before Jessica Wayne ended the run with a put back layup at the 2:55 mark.  The teams traded scores the rest of the period as Ft. Hays State held a 25-23 lead after the first ten minutes.
 
Three pointers from Wayne, Emily Miller and Addie Lackey gave Emporia State a 32-25 lead two minutes into the second quarter.  The lead stayed between four and seven points over the next seven minutes as Kali Martin connected on two free throws with 1:03 left to give the Lady Hornets a 44-37 lead.  The Tigers scored the final five points of the half on a layup by Whitney Clampitt and a three-pointer from Madison Mittie as Emporia State took a 44-42 lead to the locker rooms.
 
Carly Heim scored an old fashioned three-point play with 8:08 left in the third to give Ft. Hays State a 47-46 lead.  Tiana Moala answered with a layup inside to make it 48-47 before the Tigers went on a 12-2 run to take a nine-point lead with 3:49 left in the quarter.  Emporia State trailed 64-56 when Lackey hit a three-pointer at the 1:11 mark and Wayne got a steal and layup on the next possession to pull the Lady Hornets within 64-61 headed to the fourth quarter.
 
Tyra Jones got an old-fashioned three-point play with 8:56 left in the game to tie the score at 64.  The teams traded scores until Taylor Rolfs hit a three-pointer to give FHSU a 70-66 lead with 5:36 left.  Jones scored and missed the and one opportunity but Wayne was able to get the rebound and the put back to tie the game at 70 with 4:42 left.
 
Tatyana Leggett hit one of two free throws with 4:18 remaining to give FHSU a 71-70 lead before Jones hit an elbow jumper with 4:02 left to give the Lady Hornets a 72-71 lead.  The Tigers then hit three of four free throws around an Emporia State turnover to go up 74-72.  Lanie Page got back to back jumpers to push the lead to six points with 2:03 remaining.  The Tiger run would eventually hit 13-0 as they took an 84-72 lead on a steal and breakaway layup by Rolfs with 46.4 seconds left.  Tiana Moala scored inside for Emporia State at the buzzer for the final score of 84-74.
 
Jessica Wayne led Emporia State with 20 points, ten rebounds, five steals and three assists.  Tyra Jones had 20 points and Addie Lackey added 11 points to join Wayne in double figures.
 
Emporia State will step out of MIAA play and out of the continental United States for their next action.  The Lady Hornets will play at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on December 17 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
 
NOTES
Emporia State is now 83-52 all-time against nationally ranked teams and 34-26 against teams ranked in the top ten nationally.
With her 11 points Addie Lackey tied Rachel Hanf (1,218 points from 2009-13) for 20th on the Emporia State career scoring list.
With three three-pointers Addie Lackey tied Laura Patrick (175 3FGM from 2012-14) for fifth on the Lady Hornet career three-pointer list.
Her career high tying five blocked shots gave Tiana Moala 98 blocks in her career and moved her past Kyrstie Miller (95 from 2014-17) for tenth on the Lady Hornet career blocked shots list.
