December 18, 2018-The 23rd ranked Lady Hornets went eight of 12 from behind the three-point line in the first quarter on the way to a 67-38 victory over UPR-Bayamon on the final day of the Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
With Emporia State trailing 7-6 with 7:00 left in the first period, Emily Miller jump started a 11-0 run with a jumper in the lane to give the Lady Hornets the lead. Kali Martin then hit back to back three-pointers and Miller splashed another three to give Emporia State a 17-7 lead with 4:30 left in the quarter. They would end the period going eight of 12 from behind the arc to take a 26-13 lead into the second quarter.
UPR-Bayamon scored the first five points of the second before Miller and Daley Handy hit back to back threes to push the lead back into double digits at 32-18 with 5:24 left in the half. The lead would grow to 18 points in the quarter on a free throw by Handy with 2:46 left before Bayamon hit a three to make the half-time score 38-23.
The Cowgirls scored he first six points of the second half and a layup by Kiaraliz Rios completed a 9-0 run and brought the deficit under ten at 38-29 with 8:44 left in the third quarter. The Lady Hornets answered with a 10-0 run with the final five points coming from Jessica Wayne as Emporia State took a 48-29 lead with 4:58 left in the period. The teams traded scores the rest of the period and ESU took a 54-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Hornets held Bayamon to just six points in the final ten minutes as they cruised to the 67-38 victory.
Emily Miller was the only Lady Hornet in double figures with 14 points but Jessica Wayne, Addie Lackey and Tyra Jones each scored nine while Kali Martin added eight points. After hitting eight of their first 11 three-pointers, Emporia State finished up 12 of 26 from beyond the arc for the game.
After another day of sightseeing in Puerto Rico, the Lady Hornets will take a week off for the NCAA Life in the Balance break before returning to action against Baker on Sunday, December 30 at home. Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 5:30 p.m.
