#25 LADY HORNETS ROLL TO 82-64 WIN OVER NEWMAN

Emporia State defeats Newman in non-conference action

December 1, 2018- The #25 Lady Hornets opened the month of December with a 82-64 win over Newman in White Auditorium to wrap up their home stand before starting conference play.

Newman scored the first points to open the game with a three pointer from Dede Johnson 32 seconds into the first quarter. Tyra Jones got the first bucket for the Lady Hornets making a layup with 8:36 on the clock to cut the Jets lead to 3-2.

With 5:32 left in the first quarter, Addie Lackey made a layup to give the Lady Hornets the 11-10 lead. Jessica Wayne would follow that up with another layup to extend the Lady Hornets lead to 13-10 going into the media timeout and Emporia State would not relinquish the lead.

In the last 4:40 of the quarter, the Lady Hornets outscored the Jets 7-6 to take a 20-16 lead into the break.

The Jets closed the gap to 20-19 with a quick three to start the second quarter but the Lady Hornets answered with a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 26-19. By the second quarter media timeout at 3:53 on the clock, the Lady Hornets pushed their lead to 34-27.

Over the next 2:12, Emporia State used a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 41-27 going 7-8 from the free throw line in that span. The Lady Hornets would tak a 47-34 lead into the half.

The Jets scored the first two buckets out of halftime to cut the Lady Hornets lead to single digits at 47-38. Emporia State quickly found their pace in the third quarter and would extend their lead to 59-44 at the media timeout with 4:41 remaining in the third.

Teams exchanged scores for the remainder of the third quarter as the Lady Hornets held onto a 67-55 lead heading to the break.

The Lady Hornets scored the first five points of the fourth quarter as Emily Miller hit a three and Jessica Wayne knocked down a pair of free throws to extend their lead to 72-55. The Jets hit back-to-back threes to bring the Lady Hornets lead down to 72-61 before the teams had a 2:42 scoring drought.

Tyra Jones broke the drought with a three pointer with 5:14 remaining in the game. The Lady Hornets would take their largest lead of the game at 80-61 with 1:44 remaining before finishing out the game leading 82-64.

The Lady Hornets were led by Tyra Jones who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Addie Lackey, Emily Miller and Jessica Wayne joined Jones in double figures as Lackey had 18 points, Miller had 14 and Wayne scored 10. Emporia State shot 48.2% from the field, 50% from beyond the arc and 66.7% from the free throw line.

The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Thursday, December 6 as they travel to Kearney, Nebraska to open MIAA conference action against Nebraska Kearney.
