EMPORIA STATE MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS 93-55 AT #1 KANSAS

Hassan Thomas and Sawyer Glick in double figures for Hornets

October 25, 2018-Emporia State was within 21 points with under five minutes left but #1 Kansas closed the game on a 10-0 run to post a 93-55 win over the Hornets in exhibition action on Thursday in Allen Fieldhouse.

Sawyer Glick gave the Hornets a 3-2 lead 1:05 into the game but the Jayhawks would then go on a 13-0 run to take the lead and it would reach 32-9 with 5:50 left. 

The Hornets would play the Jayhawks even the rest of the half. Sawyer Glick and Hassan Thomas combined to score 11 of ESU's 13 points as the Hornets trailed 45-22 at the break.

Emporia State scored the first five points of the second half on a three-pointer from Sawyer Glick and a break away steal and layup from Kam Rowan to cut the lead to under 20.  KU used a 10-2 run highlighted by a Udoka Azubuike dunk with 11:58 left to go up 61-33.   Kooper Glick and Thomas combined on a 9-2 run by the Hornets to cut the lead back to 21 at 63-42 with 9:28 left in the game. 

The Hornets maintained that deficit over the next five minutes and another three-pointer from Kooper Glick made it 72-51 with 4:42 remaining.  The Jayhawks then went on an 11-2 run led by eight points from Dedric Lawson to take an 83-53 lead with 2:30 left.  Thomas hit two free throws with 2:16 left to cut the deficit back to 28 points but the Jayhawks finished the game on a 10-0 run for the final deficit.

Hassan Thomas led Emporia State with 17 points and five steals while Sawyer Glick added 14 points.  Justin Washington grabbed ten rebounds off the bench for the Hornets.  Dedric Lawson finished with 31 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Jayhawks. 

The Hornets will open the regular season on November 9 when they take on #14 Southwest Minnesota State in the MIAA-NSIC Challenge. Tip-off from Marshall, Minn. is set for 6:00 p.m.
