April 8, 2017-In the men's edition of the tennis Turnpike Tussle, Emporia State fell 8-1 to Washburn on Saturday afternoon on the Milton courts of the Kossover Complex.
Gerard Pont provided the highlight of the dual for Emporia State as he defeated the 28th ranked player in the country, Alejandro Valarezo Plaza 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at #1 singles. The Hornets almost picked up another win as Matheus Mota fell in three sets 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 1-0 (12-10) at #5 singles.
The Hornets started out in a hole as the Ichabods won all three doubles matches. Washburn clinched the match after the first two singles matches on the way to the 8-1 win.
Both the Hornet men and women are back in action on Tuesday, April 11 as they play host to Newman on Senior Day. Matches are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. on the Milton Courts at the Kossover Tennis Complex on the Emporia State campus.
