Hornet women win 5-4, men fall 7-2

April 11, 2017-Playing their final home matches of the 2017 season, the Emporia State tennis teams split a pair of duals with Newman.  The Hornet women won 5-4 while the men lost 7-2 on Senior Day at the Milton Courts in the Kossover Complex.

The Emporia State women won the first five matches finished to clinch the dual early.  Tawni Griffey and Camila Ramos won 8-4 at #1 doubles followed by Kaley Clark and Shannen Meyer picking up an 8-6 win at #2 doubles.  Amy Fugit and Tahlia Walsh completed the doubles sweep with a 9-7 win at #3.

Playing on Senior Day it was fitting that the two seniors for the Hornets clinched the dual win.  Fugit won the first completed singles match 6-3, 6-2 at #5 before Griffey took a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win at #1 singles.  The Jets would win the remaining four singles matches to make the final score 5-4.

The Hornet men were just the opposite of the women as they fell in all three doubles matches. After Farhan Sadique and Anton Levaovich fell 8-3 at #3, the other two doubles team battled to 16 games and a tie breaker before falling.  Matheus Mota and Lukas Winkler fell 9-7 at #1 doubles while Oliver Dixon and Gerard Pont fell in a tiebreaker 7-5 at #2 doubles.

Four of the six singles matches went to a third set tiebreaker. After the Jets picked up a win at #1 singles, senior Diego Vargas staved off dual point with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win at #6 singles. Levanovich won the other singles competition with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win in the final match of the day at #5 singles.
