EMPORIA STATE TENNIS SPLITS WITH NEB.-KEARNEY

Hornet men win, women fall to Lopers

March 16, 2017-The Emporia State men improved to 7-0 on the season and 1-0 in the MIAA with a 5-4 win over Neb.-Kearney while the Hornet women dropped their first match 7-2 to the Lopers.

The Hornet men took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Farhan Sadique and Anton Levanovich won at 8-4 in the #3 position to give the Hornets an early 1-0 lead. Gerard Pont and Oliver Dixon fell 8-4 at #2 to even the dual at 1-1.  Patrick Cameron and Matheus Mota gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead with a 9-7 win at #1 doubles.

Dixon started singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #2 singles to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead. Sadique made it 4-2 with a 7-6 (10-5), 6-2 win at #5 before Mota clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win a the #4 singles spot.

In the women's dual Sarah Durham and Tahlia Walsh got Emporia State's first win at #2 doubles. Amy Fugit and Lori Ahuja almost gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead before falling 9-7 at #3 doubles.

Down 4-1 after two singles matches, Tawni Griffey got the Hornets a win at #1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory but that would be the last win for Emporia State in a 7-2 loss.

The Hornet women will be back in action on Friday, March 17 against Ft. Hays State.  First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. on the Milton Courts at the Kossover Tennis Complex on the Emporia State campus.
