February 14, 2017-In the 209th edition of the Turnpike Tussle Washburn used a 15-1 run midway through the second half to blow open a 90-63 win over Emporia State on Tuesday in Topeka.
The Hornets struggled from the start, falling behind 10-0 to start the game, and trailed 18-5 with 11:19 left in the first half. Emporia State then had their best stretch of the night as they went on a 14-4 run to pull within three points. Jay Temaat had two three-pointers and Brandon Hall scored the final six points of the run to get the Hornets within 22-19 with 6:34 left in the half. Washburn answered with an 11-3 run of their own to take a 33-22 lead with 3:25 left. They would then score the final nine points of the half to go into the break ahead 44-27.
Brady Skeens held off any Emporia State comeback to start the second half. After Temaat hit a three to pull the Hornets within 46-30, Skeens went on a personal 13-6 run to keep the Hornets at bay. After Skeens personal run, the Ichabods had five different players score in a 15-1 run to take a 78-44 lead with 5:19 left. The lead would eventually reach 36 points before Emporia State ended the game on a 19-10 run with Danny Hodges getting six of the points in the final 2:53 of action.
Brandon Hall and Jay Temaat each had nine points to lead the Hornets in scoring.Â
Emporia State will be back in action on Thursday night when they play host to Southwest Baptist in the first of a three games in White Auditorium to end the regular season. Tip-off against the Bearcats is set for 7:30 p.m.
