November 25, 2017-The #22 Lady Hornets got 34 points and 11 rebounds from Tyra Jones as Emporia State won their 22nd straight home opener with an 88-81 victory over Texas Woman's on Saturday at White Auditorium.
The Lady Hornets got out to a 7-2 lead in the first 2:04 of action and would never trail in the game. Jones had 12 points on four of four shooting with four free throws in the opening quarter as Emporia State led 21-15 after ten minutes.
Emporia State led by as many as nine point in the second quarter before Texas Woman's ended the half on a 7-2 lead to cut the lead to four a 44-40 headed into the locker rooms.
The Lady Hornets opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 56-42 lead with 6:57 left in the third quarter. Four different Lady Hornets scored during the run. Texas Woman's cut the lead to 11 at 69-58 at the end of the third quarter.
Emporia State still had an 11 point lead with 5:42 left at 76-65 when the Pioneers began their final comeback attempt. Texas Woman's went on a 15-4 run capped by an Alexis Nezianya layup with 1:22 left to tie the game at 80. The Lady Hornets then hit eight of eight free throws in the final 51 seconds to post an 88-81 win.
Jones had her second straight double-double with 34 points and 11 rebounds to lead three Lady Hornets in double figures. Emily Miller had 15 points and Jacee Kramer added 13 points and five assists.
The Lady Hornets are back in action on Wednesday, November 29 when they play host to Oklahoma Christian. Tip-off from White Auditorium is set for 7:00 p.m.
NOTES
Jones 34 points are the most by a Lady Hornet since Cassondra Boston scored 34 in the season opener against Cameron on November 16, 2007.
