January 22, 2017 - The #9 Lady Hornets picked up their seventh win in MIAA play Sunday afternoon with a 74-65 win over Missouri Southern in White Auditorium.
TIGHTLY CONTESTED
A quick three pointer from Missouri Southern gave them an early 3-0 lead to start the game. Neither team would score again until the 6:36 mark in the first quarter, a jumper from the Lions to go up 5-0. Megan Holloway scored the first points for the Lady Hornets with a pair of free throws at the 6:18 mark. Missouri Southern would maintain the lead the rest of the quarter, getting as far ahead as nine points. The Lions led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter after a 6-0 run by Emporia State. Kathryn Flott ended the quarter on a buzzer beater layup high off the glass.
Flott came out of the break with another layup to bring the Lady Hornets within one with 9:38 remaining in the second quarter. Emporia State did not take the lead until a layup from Jessica Wayne at the 8:19 mark in the second. There were three lead changes and four ties the rest of the half to have Missouri Southern lead 40-34 going into the locker room.
LOCKDOWN DEFENSE
Addie Lackey opened up the second half with a three pointer that put her in the top ten of Emporia State's made three point field goals with 123 career three pointers. The Lions kept the lead until a three from Kyrstie Miller gave the Lady Hornets a 52-50 lead with 1:59 to play in the third quarter, forcing a Missouri Southern timeout. A Flott layup extended the lead 54-50 heading into the fourth quarter.
A spread out Emporia State defense slowed down Missouri Southern at the end of the third quarter into the fourth. Back-to-back Kelly Moten and Miller jumpers put the Lady Hornets up 58-50 with 9:27 remaining. Emporia State spread the lead out as much as 12 points with 5:30 to play, but would win by nine, 74-65, over Missouri Southern. The Lady Hornets shot six for six from the line in the last 1:07 of game play to lock in the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
Moten led all players with 25 points, had six rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Miller was the only other Lady Hornet in double digits with 11 points, all of them coming in the second half, eight in the fourth quarter. Miller also had six rebounds, two blocks, two steals and shot three for seven from the arc. Lackey had nine points, six rebounds and two blocks. Flott also had nine points, leading all players with ten rebounds, seven of them offensive. Holloway added eight points with two steals. The Lady Hornets out-rebounded the Lions 43-26, grabbing 20 offensive boards. Emporia State shot 18 for 23 from the stripe.
