EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL SWEPT IN TUESDAY TURNPIKE TUSSLE TO #18 WASHBURN

Hornets drop first game in MIAA play against the Ichabods

Box Score September 20, 2016 - The Emporia State volleyball team was swept (20-25, 20-25, 19-25) by #18 Washburn on Tuesday in the Turnpike Tussle. The Hornets are now 7-6 on the season.

The Ichabods got an early 4-2 lead in set one before the Hornets answered with a 4-0 run to take a 6-4 lead. Emporia State maintained that lead until a 7-7 tie on a Washburn ace. The Hornets were able to take a two point lead, keeping a steady lead until another tie at 11-11 before the Ichabods regained the lead. There were four more tied scores before a final tied score at 16-16 on a Tatum Graves kill. A 4-0 run by Washburn gave them a 20-16 lead before Emporia State took a timeout. The Ichabods went on to win 25-20 in set one.

In set two, it was a balanced game before Washburn went on a 5-1 run to take an 9-5 lead. The Hornets answered with four straight points of their own to tie the game 9-9. Another 5-1 run for the Ichabods gave them a 14-10 lead. Taylor Otting would tie the game again for Emporia State at 16-16. Washburn scored two points in response only to have Emporia State score another two to tie the game 18-18 on a block from Shayla Cotman and Jamie Hauptman. The Ichabods finished the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-20 and lead the match 2-0.

In set three, Emporia State trailed 20-14 before the Hornets would go on a 4-1 run to close the gap 21-18. Emporia State would score only one more point and drop set three 25-19.

Josie Williams had another double-double for the Hornets with 11 kills and 11 digs. Danika Burton followed with 8 kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Emma Dixon led the Hornets with 11 assists. Allie Maloney had a match high 18 digs. Cotman had five block assists and two solo blocks to total seven blocks. Otting added another three block assists. Emporia State held Washburn to their second lowest hitting percentage this season.

Emporia State will travel to Fort Hays, Kan. to face the Tigers for their second MIAA match. First serve will be on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6:00 p.m. against Fort Hays in Gross Memorial Coliseum.
