Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 September 10, 2016 - The Emporia State volleyball team went 4-0 at the MSU Hampton Inn-Vitational, defeating Dallas Baptist in four sets and Fort Lewis in five sets on day two of the tournament.

FAST START
The Hornets defeated the Lady Patriots in four sets, 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, for the first game on day two of the tournament. Emporia State had an early 3-0 start until Dallas Baptist would answer with three points of their own to tie the game 3-3. Two Jamie Hauptman kills and a block from Shayla Cotman and Hauptman gave the Hornets another three point lead at 6-3. The Lady Patriots answered with a 6-1 run to take a 9-7 lead. There would be 13 tied scores until a 24-23 Dallas Baptist set point. A Lady Patriot attacking error allowed another tie at 24-24. The Hornets answered with two straight points to end the set 26-24 on another Cotman and Hauptman stuff. Emporia State took advantage early in the second set, starting on a 6-2 lead. The Hornets maintained the lead until the Lady Patriots went on a 8-2 run to tie the game 17-17. Dallas Baptist had another 24-22 set point after an Emporia State attack error when the Hornets scored four straight points to claim set two 26-24. Emporia State jumped out to a 10-2 start in set three. The Hornets kept a comfortable lead at 18-12 when the Lady Patriots went on a 8-1 run to take the lead 20-19 on a Hornet attack error. Kimberly Bell came out from the timeout with a kill to tie the game 20-20. Dallas Baptist ended set three on a 5-1 run to win 25-21. In set four, the Hornets were the first to reach ten points after a Cotman kill to lead by three. Emporia State would keep a steady lead until a 14-14 tied game. The set would be tied twice more until a final tie at 22-22 from yet another Cotman and Hauptman block. Emporia State scored three of the last four points to end on a Bell kill and win 25-23.

Danika Burton led the Hornets with 12 kills on a .435 hitting percentage with just two errors in four sets. Josie Williams and Cotman each added ten kills. Williams had another double-double with 15 digs. Cotman had seven blocks against the Lady Patriots. Hauptman had nine kills and five blocks in game one on Saturday. Bell also added another double-double to the season with 21 assists and 17 digs. Emma Dixon added 16 assists. Allie Maloney led Emporia State with 19 digs. The Hornets were able to hold the Lady Patriots to a sub .100 hitting percentage in two of the four sets, totaling 19 blocks.

STRONG FINISH
Emporia State finished the tournament strong in a five set battle against Fort Lewis, winning 14-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-18, 15-11. The Skyhawks had a quick 7-2 jump on the Hornets and did not look back to win 25-14 in set one. The first tie in set two came at 2-2 until Emporia State went on a 5-1 run to take a 7-3 lead. Fort Lewis answered with four points of their own to tie the game again at 7-7. There would be seven more tied scores in set two until a final tie at 24-24 from a Hornet attack error. Back-to-back Williams and Julia Joseph kills claimed set two for the Hornets 26-24. An early 9-3 lead by Fort Lewis forced an Emporia State timeout in set three. The Hornets would get within two points four times before the Skyhawks ended the set on four straight points to win 25-19. In set four there were seven tied scores when the game was tied 14-14. The Hornets went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-14 lead. Fort Lewis would score only four more points before Emporia State forced a fifth and final set. The Skyhawks got the quick jump in set five, taking a 2-0 lead early. The Hornets fought back to force a 4-4 tie from a Tatum Graves kill. Emporia State took the lead and did not look back, never trailing after that point in set five. Hauptman finished the tournament for the Hornets on a kill to claim set five and the match 15-11.

Hauptman and Williams each had 15 kills for the Hornets to lead all players, Hauptman earning a .324 hitting percentage. Williams had a double-double with ten digs. Williams, Bell, Kelly Holden and Dixon all had two aces in the five set match. Joseph added another ten kills. Dixon led with 26 assists, Bell adding 23 assists. Bell had a double-double, adding another ten digs. Maloney led all players with 25 digs. Holden also had 13 digs.Burton led the Hornets with six blocks. Both Cotman and Burton were named to the MSU Hampton Inn-Vitational All-Tournament Team.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will travel to Shawnee, Okla. for the MIAA-GAC Challenge on Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17. Emporia State will face Southern Nazarene, East Central, Southwestern Oklahoma and Oklahoma Baptist.
