March 21, 2016-After a busy last ten days, the Emporia State tennis teams will take on Washburn in the Turnpike Tussle Tennis edition this week. The men will play on Tuesday, with the women scheduled to compete on Wednesday. Both duals will be held in Topeka with a 2:00 p.m. scheduled first serve.
HORNET MEN
The Hornet men are 12-1 on the year and 1-0 in the MIAA. They won three straight after suffering their first loss of the season to #45 East Central on March 14.
Gerard Pont and Matheus Mota have been the work horses of the team this year as each sport 12-1 records in singles play. Pont is also 12-1 in doubles action and Mota is 9-4. They have each played in four different positions in singles, while Pont has played all three doubles slots and Matheus has seen action in #1 and #2 doubles.
Patrick Cameron is 8-3 in singles play with a 6-3 mark at #1 while going 10-1 in doubles action. He was the MIAA Player of the Week on March 14.
Keenan Smith is 9-2 in singles action, having played in five of the six positions. He is 8-4 in doubles with a 7-4 mark in the #1 spot.
Farhan Sadique and Lucas Winkler are both undefeated in singles play. Sadique is 8-0, playing mostly at #5 and #6, while Winkler is 7-0 with a 5-0 mark at #6 singles. Sadique is 8-1 in doubles with a 5-1 mark with Collin Connor in the #3 position. Winkler is 5-0 with three different partners at #3 doubles.
Louis Ledin is 5-3 in singles play and 4-0 in doubles action.
Collin Connor has won his only two singles matches and is 6-2 in doubles.
HORNET WOMEN
The Emporia State women are 9-4 on the season and 1-1 in the MIAA. They won their first seven duals of the year. The one loss in MIAA play was a 5-4 decision at Lindenwood.
Tawni Griffey leads the team from the top of the order. She is 10-3 in singles play, all at the #1 spot, and 12-1 in doubles action at both #1 and #2.
Amy Fugit is 9-3 on the season in singles and has gone 10-2 in doubles. She has spread her singles between the #3, #4 and #5 spots and has played all three doubles positions.
Kaley Clark and Lori Ahuja are both 9-4 in singles play with Clark going 9-4 and Ahuja 7-4 in doubles play. The two of them have combined to go 3-1 at #2 doubles over the last four matches.
Kristen and Kayla Fraley have filled out the #5 and #6 spot in singles along with the #3 doubles slot over the last four duals. Kayla Fraley joined the team before their spring break trip due to injuries.
WASHBURN'S TEAMS
The Washburn men are 7-1 on the season and will be playing their MIAA opener while the Ichabod women are 4-4 and defeated Lincoln in their MIAA opener.
UP NEXT
The Emporia State men will travel to McPherson on Saturday, March 26 to take on the Bulldogs while both teams will be back at the EHS Courts on Monday, March 28 to play William Jewell.
