EMPORIA STATE TENNIS SPLITS MIAA MATCHES AT LINDENWOOD

Hornet men win 7-2, women fall 5-4

March 17, 2016-The Emporia State tennis teams split their MIAA opener at Lindenwood on Thursday. The men improved to 11-1 on the season and 1-0 in the MIAA with a 7-2 win while the women fell 5-4 with three set losses in two of the singles matches.

MEN
The Hornets got wins at #2 and #3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into the singles competition.
After Lindenwood took the decision at #1 singles to tie the dual the Hornets won three straight matches to clinch the win.  Gerard Pont won 7-5, 7-5 at #2 singles to give Emporia State the lead back.  Louis Ledin then took a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #4 before Matheus Mota clinched the dual with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 win at #3 singles.  Keenan Smith won 7-6, 6-1 at #5 and Farhan Sadique finished the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #6 singles.
 
WOMEN
Tawni Griffey and Amy Fugit started things with an 8-4 win at #1 doubles before Lindenwood came back to take #3 doubles to even the dual.  Kaley Clark and Lori Ahuja won 9-7 at #2 to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Griffey made it 3-1 Hornets with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #1 singles before the Lions Diana Castro took a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at #4 singles. Fugit won 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at #3 singles to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead. Lindenwood's Gloria Marras took a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Kaley Clark at #2 singles followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win by Rebeca Aguilar over Emporia State newcomer Kayla Fraley at #6 to even the dual at 4-4.   Lindenwood took the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win by Daria Ivanova over Kristen Fraley at #5 singles for a 5-4 win.
 
UP NEXT
Both the men and women will continue their four day road trip on Friday at Mo.-St. Louis.  First serve in St. Louis is set for 1:00 p.m.
