EMPORIA STATE TENNIS FALLS IN BOTH MEN'S AND WOMEN'S ACTION

March 14, 2016-The Emporia State tennis teams were both defeated by East Central (Okla.) on Monday at the EHS Courts.  The men fell 6-3 while the women lost 7-2.
 
MEN'S ACTION
The Hornets were within two tie breakers of pulling out a win.  Patrick Cameron and Gerard Pont got the only win in doubles with an 8-5 win at #2.  Keenan Smith and Matheus Mota were close in #1 falling 9-8 (10-4) to give East Central a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Emporia State got wins by Pont at #4 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Lukas Winkler at #6 with a 6-3, 7-6 decision. The key match was Keenan Smith at #5 singles where he suffered a 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) loss.
 
WOMEN'S ACTION
The Emporia State women picked up an 8-3 win by Tawni Griffey and Amy Fugit at #2 doubles and were leading 6-3 at #1 when Sarah Dunham had to withdraw with an injury.  That coupled with a loss at #3 put the Hornets in a 2-1 deficit headed into singles without a player in the #6 position. Kaley Clark was able to get a 6-4, 6-1 win at #2 but that would be it as the Hornets fell 7-2.
 
 
UP NEXT
Tuesday's matches against Southwest Baptist have been postponed and will be made up on Saturday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m.  The next action for Emporia State will be on Wednesday, March 16 at Truman in Kirksville, Mo.
