#38 EMPORIA STATE OPENS SEASON WITH WIN OVER #31 COLORADO - PUEBLO

Evan Koehler hits home run on first pitch he sees

February 5, 2016 - The #38 Hornets started the 2016 season with a 9-5 home win over #31 Colorado State - Pueblo Friday afternoon.

COMING OUT HOT
After Garrett Brummett got through a scoreless first, with Dalton Wheat on first Evan Koehler took advantage of his first pitch of the season, hitting it over the center field wall for a two run home run. The Thunderwolves answered with two home runs of their own in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Wheat singled up the middle of the bottom of the third, sending in a run to tie the game 3-3. Koehler would reach first on a fielder's choice to score Wheat to take the lead 4-3.

PITCHING STAFF
Garrett Brummett started the game for the Hornets, pitching the first three innings allowing six hits and three runs while striking out seven. Matt Slauter was credited with the win, pitching four innings allowing five hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Grant Bachura finished the game, pitching a perfect eighth and ninth.

SOLID HITTING
Evan Koehler and BJ Dean each had a home run for Emporia State, Koehler leading the way with three RBI while Wheat and Dean each had two RBI. Koehler, Wheat, and Ryan McBroom all went two for four on the day.

UP NEXT
The two teams are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the middle game of the three-game series. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. at Trusler Sports Complex.
