#38 EMPORIA STATE BASEBALL HAMMERS WAY TO 18-6 WIN AT METRO STATE

Hornets score 18 runs on 24 hits in win

February 13, 2016-The #38 Hornets pounded out 18 runs on 24 hits in an 18-6 win at Metro State on Saturday afternoon in Denver, Colo.  Zac Shaw was four of five with four RBI and two runs scored and Evan Koehler hit his second home run of the season.

BREAK OUT THE BATS
After a pitchers duel in the first game of the series the bats were out in full force in game two.  The Hornets got on the board in the second when Shaw singled in Wade Hanna for a 1-0 lead.  Emporia Stat then added six runs in the third with Shaw adding a two RBI triple to highlight the action.  Koehler led off the fourth with a home run that led to a four run inning as Emporia State took an 11-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

BREAK UP THE STREAK
Nathan Gieber allowed one hit through the first 3.1 innings, extending the Emporia State pitching staff's string of scoreless innings to 22.1, before giving up a run in the fourth and three in the fifth.  He turned the game over to the bullpen leading 11-4 after five innings.

FINISHING UP
The Hornets a three run homer from Derek Francis in the seventh and added two more in the eighth to go up 16-4.  The RoadRunners picked up a single run in the bottom of the eighth only to see Emporia State add two more in the top of the ninth.  Metro State added one in the bottom of the ninth and had the bases loaded when Nathan Whitcomb got a called third strike to end the game.

Emporia State will go for the series sweep on Sunday.  First pitch at Metro State is set for 1:00 p.m. (CT) in Denver.
