EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS NON-CONFERENCE MATCH AGAINST NEWMAN

Hornets improve to 11-12 on the season

Box Score October 18, 2016 - The Emporia State volleyball team swept Newman University, 25-16, 25-18, 25-22, in a non-conference match for the Dig for a Cure night. The Hornets improved to 11-12 on the season.

STRONG START
After two tied scores in the first four points of set one, Emporia State took the lead until another tied scored at 8-8. A kill from Taylor Otting regained the lead for the Hornets, a lead they would keep on the way to a 25-16 victory in the first set. Emporia State had 16 kills on a .325 hitting percentage, led by Otting who hit seven for nine in the first set alone for a .778 hitting percentage. The Hornets held the Jets to a .023 hitting percentage in set one.

KEEP IT ROLLING
Emporia State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in set two when Newman had a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game. A Hornet 6-0 run gave them an 11-6 lead. The Jets would get within two but never regain the lead in the second set. After two sets, Emporia State was holding Newman to a .054 hitting percentage compared to the Hornets' .238 hitting percentage.

SQUEEZING BY
The third set was closer than the previous two, having nine tied scores, the final one coming at 22-22. Back-to-back Newman errors gave Emporia State a 24-22 lead. A block by Tatum Graves and Danika Burton finished the game strong for the Hornets, taking a 25-22 third set victory as well as a match win.

SEEING DOUBLE
Jamie Hauptman led the Hornets with ten kills on a .360 hitting percentage with three block assists. Otting followed with nine kills and a solo block. Josie Williams joined with eight kills and 12 digs while Graves added another seven kills. Shayla Cotman had six kills on a .312 hitting percentage. Both setters earned a double-double against the Jets. Kimberly Bell had 12 assists and 17 digs while Emma Dixon had 18 assists and ten digs. Allie Maloney led all players with 25 digs also earning seven assists. Burton had four block assists joined by Graves with three block assists. Emporia State had seven team blocks compared to Newman's one.

UP NEXT
Emporia State will travel to Edmond, Okla. to take on #11 Central Oklahoma. First serve will be at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21.
