DIGGING FOR A CURE
Emporia State returns to White Auditorium for a non-conference match-up with Newman on the Hornets annual Dig for the Cure night. The first 300 fans that make a donation to the June Bug Cancer Fund will receive a Pink Dig for the Cure T-shirt and anyone wearing pink will get a $2 discount on admission to the match.
LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State fell in straight sets (14-25, 26-28, 19-25) to #17 Northwest Missouri on Saturday night in Maryville, Mo.
Tatum Graves led with seven kills on the night, adding three block assists. Williams and Taylor Otting each had another six kills. Emma Dixon had 15 assists followed by Kimberly Bell with 11 assists. Allie Maloney had 17 digs against the Bearcats. Danika Burton had four block assists joined by Shayla Cotman with three block assists.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is 247-128 (.659) in his 12th year as the head coach at Emporia State and 126-77 (.621) in MIAA play. He has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournaments and one MIAA Championship. Xu is 3-0 against the Jets.
Destiny Clark is 41-16 is in her second season at Newman. This will be her first meeting with Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 10-12, 3-7 in the MIAA. The Hornets are third in the MIAA averaging 2.15 blocks per set.. Emporia State is fifth in the conference averaging 16.61 digs per set. Danika Burton is second in the MIAA with 1.16 blocks per set. Allie Maloney is second in the league at 5.04 digs per set. The Hornets 107 digs against Washburn are the most in an MIAA match this season. Emporia State is 7-5 in non-conference action this year.
ABOUT NEWMAN
Newman is 15-7 on the season, 4-3 in the Heartland Conference, good for fourth in the conference. They have lost both matches they have played against MIAA teams this year, at Neb.-Kearney and at Central Missouri. The Jets lead the Heartland Conference in hitting at .202 and kills with 13.85 per set. They are second in the league in digs with 19.31 per set. Brook Conley leads the Heartland in assists with 9.94 per set and service aces with 0.45 per set.
THE SERIES
Emporia State has won all three previous matches with Newman. This is the second meeting between the two Kansas schools in White Auditorium. The two have not met since the 2012 season.
LAST SERVE VS. NEWMAN
Emporia State swept its fourth straight volleyball match with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 victory over Newman in Wichita, Kan. Katie Deutschmann posted a double-double with 12 kills and 21 assists. Brianna Kaiser added 10 kills and seven digs. Meg Schwartz led the Hornets in digs with nine, while Sydney Hartman assisted on 23 kills. As a team, Emporia State hit .473 for the match, while holding Newman to a .138 hitting percentage. Emporia State jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in set one, and closed out the set on an 8-4 run. Emporia State pulled away late in the second for a 25-20 win. The Hornets jumped out to an 8-2 lead which set the tone as the Hornets took the last set 25-11.
NEXT SERVE
The Hornets will make a two state road trip this weekend. Emporia State plays at #11 Central Oklahoma on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Edmond, Okla. They will wrap up the trip on Saturday against Pittsburg State at 6:00 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan.
