EMPORIA STATE MEN DROP 70-62 DECISION AT WASHBURN

Hornets shoot just 29% from field in loss

January 23, 2016-The Emporia State men shot just 29.2% from the field and were still within four points with under a minute left in a 70-62 loss at Washburn on Sefore aturday night. 

DIGGING A HOLE
The Hornets fell behind 10-4 at the first media timeout.  They trailed 33-19 with 2:29 left in the half before going on a 10-0 run to close within 33-29 with 35.8 seconds left on a free throw from Brandon Hall.  Brady Skeen broke the run for Washburn on a free throw with 6.5 seconds left to give the Ichabods a 34-29 lead at the break.

STARTING STRONG IN THE SECOND
Terrence Moore scored the first four points of the second half to pull the Hornets within 34-33 with 18:37 left in the game.  The Ichabods answered with back to back buckets by Cameron Wiggins and Skeen to make it 38-33 with 16:49 left. 

PLAYING CATCH-UP
Washburn would take a 12 point lead with 5:44 left in the game and led by 11 with 4:02 left when Javion Blake hit their final field goal of the night.  The Hornets started thier final comeback when Micah Swank hit two free throws with 3:01 left to bring the lead under double digits. Hall hit a three-pointer with 1:55 left to cut the lead to 61-55. A free throw by Washburn's Javion Blake made it 62-55 with 1:46 remaining.  Hall answered with another jumper in the paint to pull Emporia State within five at 62-57 with 1:31 remaining.  Blake hit two more free throws with 1:05 left before Terrence Moore hit a pair of charities to make it 64-59 with 52.5 seconds left. After a quick foul Randall Smith hit two more free throws to give WU a 66-59 lead with :51.1 remaining. Charles McKinney hit a three-pointer with :42.4 left to cut the lead to 66-62 but the Ichabods would hit four of six free throws in the final :41.6 while the Hornets missed three shots for the final score of 70-62.

THE NUMBERS
Terrence Moore led Emporia State with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Brandon Hall and Charles McKinney with ten points each.  As a team the Hornets hit just 19 of 65 (29.2%) field goal attempts.  Moore, McKinney, Josh Oswald and Kevin Allen all had six rebounds to tie for the team lead. With Hall's ten points he moved into the top ten of freshmen scorers at Emporia State with 180 points.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will continue their road trip as they go to Southwest Baptist on Thursday.  Tip-off from Bolivar, Mo. is set for 7:30 p.m. on January 28.
