June 3, 2015-Emporia State senior Justin Harris can add to his list of honors after being named Capital One Academic All-America® Division II First-Team on Wednesday. This is Emporia State's 22nd Academic All-America® honor of the 21st century for Emporia State and the 46th all-time dating back to 1972.
A business major with a 3.50 GPA, Harris was a unanimous First-Team All-MIAA pick in the outfield, was named both Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings First-Team All-Region, earned second-team Daktronics and ABCA/Rawlings and honorable mention NCBWA All-American honors and was a nominee for the Ken B. Jones Award as the top student-athlete in the MIAA. He is ranked third in the nation in doubles, fifth in hits, eighth in runs, 15th in stolen bases, 21st in total bases, and 27th in triples and led the MIAA in all of those categories except total bases, stolen bases and triples where he is ranked second. He hit .415 with four home runs, 39 RBI, 25 doubles, five triples, 69 runs and 27 stolen bases on the year. His 25 doubles rank fourth, and his 93 hits are seventh on the Emporia State single season list while his 44 stolen bases last year ranks fourth. He is ranked sixth on the Emporia State career list with 170 hits, and is eighth on the career list for the Hornets with 36 doubles and nine triples. He had a 29 game hitting streak, the longest by a Hornet since Dillon Hazlett had a 32 game streak in 2011, snapped in the third game against Pittsburg State. He is one of the top ten seniors in Division II according to Baseball the Magazine and one of 25 semifinalists for the Tino Martinez Award as the top player in NCAA Division II.
He is a member of the Emporia State Athletic Director's Honor Roll, the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an MIAA Scholar-Athlete and D2ADA Academic Achievement Award winner.
Harris and St. Cloud State catcher Michael Jurgella are the only players to be named both All-American on the field and Academic All-American in baseball this year.
Harris' award is the sixth time a Hornet baseball player has been named Academic All-America® by CoSIDA and the first since 2008. He is one of just two MIAA baseball players to earn Capital One All-America® honors this year.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The Capital One Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
